Axewomen bounce back from recent losses with 7-1 win over UPEI

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Despite the intermittent downpour of rain and a soggy field, the Axewomen were able to score seven goals in a 7-1 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers.

Abigail Aucoin (Dartmouth, N.S.) was named the AUS Subway Player of the Game for her goal and assist performance against the Panthers.

Aucoin opened the game with an outstanding cross from the corner to the net that allowed Grace Somers (Bedford, N.S.)  to tap in the easy goal two minutes into the opening half.

Grace Longley's (Bedford, N.S.) corner kick in the seventh minute was eventually kicked in by Madyson Harris (Wolfville, N.S.), giving Acadia an early 2-0 lead.

An own goal scored at the 21st-minute mark, closed the Axewomen lead to 2-1.

Longley closed out the first half with a penalty kick goal that UPEI netminder Veronica Kozak (Mississauga, Ont.) had no chance on.

Ten minutes into the second half, Alli Kelly scored her first of a two-goal performance. Kelly's race to the ball and shot from outside the 18-yard box caught the far corner to give the Axewomen a 4-1 lead

Senior defender Lauren Jodrey (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) netted the Axewomen's fifth goal at the 58-minute mark after retrieving the ball from a downed teammate in front of the UPEI net.

Aucoin scored in the 59th minute after a nice move in the corner of the field, coming back to the net and laying out a beautiful left-footed kick to the top far corner of the net.

Alli Kelly scored her second goal of the game on a beautiful cross pass from teammate Meghan Johnston (Dartmouth, N.S.) at 62 minutes to end the game at 7-1.

Kozak repelled eight of 15 shots on goal by the Axewomen, while Acadia's Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, N.S.)  was tested on three shots on goal.

Mia Martell (Belfast, P.E.I.) was named the UPEI Player of the Game.

The Axewomen posted 29 shots versus UPEI's seven.

The Axewomen improve to 4-2 and snap a two-game losing streak with the win, and the Panthers are still searching for their first win at 0-4-2.

Acadia travels to UNB on Saturday, while UPEI hosts Moncton next Friday night.
