The Dalhousie Tigers made it three wins in a row with an exciting 5-4 overtime victory over the STFX X-Women
ANTIGONISH, NS - The Dalhousie Tigers made it three wins in a row with an exciting 5-4 overtime victory over the STFX X-Women in AUS women's hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Charles V. Keating Centre.
Tigers' rookie Avery Holmes (Mississauga, ON) netted the game winner 90 seconds into overtime, sniping one on a breakaway from her own end.
The X-Women controlled much of the play early, preventing any Dalhousie shots on net in the first eight minutes. However, it was the Tigers who broke the early deadlock with five minutes left in the period, as Leah MacSween (Belfountain, ON) picked up a loose puck in front of the STFX and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in off STFX goalie Amaya Giraudier (Assiniboia, MB).
Shots at the end of 20 minutes were 15-3 in favor of the home team.
The X-Women tied it up four minutes into the second period, as Alexis Perry (Brooklin, ON) one-timed a loose puck into the top corner, with Gabriel Pizza Player of the Game Joanna Martinsen (Thunder Bay, ON) getting the assist.
Second star of the game Tea Pearce (Calgary, AB) made it 2-1 four minutes later, snagging the puck at mid-ice, skating in alone, and beating Dalhousie goalie Grace Beer (Oakville, ON) five-hole.
The Tigers drew even just over a minute later, with Madison Wardle (Rockland, ON) stuffing in a rebound chance after a shot from Gabrielle Noordijk (Oakville, ON) and Lexie Small (Grand Falls, NL) while STFX was on the penalty kill.
The goals kept coming and with three minutes left before intermission, Mackenzie Lothian (Alliston, ON) fired home a powerplay goal to reclaim the home team's lead. Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) and Martinsen assisted.
The Tigers only needed three minutes of the third period to draw even again, with third star of the game Emma Robertson (Halifax, NS) tallying off a low shot from the high slot, while Ava Boyle (Ottawa, ON) assisted.
Just over a minute later, Dalhousie defender Regan Duffy (Burlington, ON) wired a wrist shot from the slot into the twine, making it 4-3 for the Tigers, with Robertson assisting.
With seven minutes to go, STFX forward Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON) scored a highlight reel marker with an end-to-end rush to draw the game even and sent it to overtime.
Beer made 35 saves while picking up the win and Giraudier had 17.
The Tigers return to action next weekend, when they visit the Mount Allison Mounties on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m. The X-Women are also on the road next weekend, and will take on the UNB REDS, also at 7 p.m.
