Capers top Tigers 82-53

[HALIFAX NS] –The Cape Breton Capers gained their second win of the season against the Dalhousie Tigers 82-53 on Saturday evening at Dalplex.

From the start, the Capers put on the pressure, not giving the Tigers room to breathe.

Kiyara Letlow (Toronto, ON) for the Capers added 8 points to the score sheet in the first quarter when on offence and denied the Tigers countlessly when on defence.

In response, the Tigers countered. A few cross-court passes opened the space for Katie Wuotila (Calgary, AB) to score a three-pointer, assisted by Mercy Olugu (Halifax, NS).

Anna Parsons (Calgary, AB) for Dalhousie came from behind the Capers counter to force mistakes and turnovers within the quarter.

The first quarter ended with the Capers up 24-14.

The Capers entered the second quarter with a strong defence, as Hans Sarah Bailey (Montreal, QC) denied the Tigers to advance on numerous occasions.

The Tigers instead found success outside the key, when Sydney Guker-Wicke (Kitchener, ON) made a three from just above half two minutes into the second.

Cape Breton strengthened their lead 22 points, to end the half 42-20.

Dalhousie came into the second half with an attempt to narrow the lead.

Olugu worked well with Kaitlyn Ferrier (Calgary, AB) to steal and counter in the third quarter. Olugu made pivotal steals and sent Ferrier on fast breaks for easy layups.

Capers Hailey Macleod (Marion Bridge, NS) found success in the third quarter and added 9 points to the tally.

Crucial defence from Simona Matic (Belgrade, Serbia) created opportunities for the Tigers to reduce the deficit.

Letlow continued to find the net and secured player of the game in the process.

The Tigers gained 23 points in the third quarter and entered the final quarter 43-62.

The final frame allowed the Capers to seal the win through forced fouls and quick counter attacks.

Both teams can be seen in action next week. The Tigers will travel mid-week to Acadia on November 1st at 6pm whereas the Capers will host Saint Mary's at 6pm ADT.
