Huskies defeat Axemen 6-3 in final game of 2024

WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Saint Mary's forwards Bradey Johnson and Nathan Dunkley each scored a pair of goals, as the Huskies defeated the Acadia Axemen 6-3 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Wednesday night at the Andrew H. McCain Arena.

It was the Axemen who took the initial lead, with forward Adam McMaster (Beamsville, ON) scoring a powerplay goal at 3:48 in the first period. The Huskies outshot the Axemen 14-10, but Acadia took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

The Huskies bounced back in the second period with a trio of goals. Just over a minute into the period, forwards Matthew MacDonald (Halifax, NS) and Nathan Dunkley (Campbellford, ON) broke out on a two-on-one, with Dunkley finishing it off to tie the game at 1-1, 1:01 into the second period.

Later in the period, the Huskies capitalized on another two-on-one, as forward Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) played a perfect pass to Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) who one-timed a shot past Axemen goaltender Thomas Couture (Lévis, QC) to give the visitors a 2-1 lead, 15:35 into the second period.

Acadia equalized with a goal from defenceman Conor Shortall (St. John's, NL), tying the game at 2-2, 18:52 into the second. But Saint Mary's retook the lead just 23 seconds later, as defenceman Connor Olson (London, ON) banked a shot off the end-boards that took a fortuitous bounce onto Dunkley's stick, as he scored his second goal of the period to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead at 19:15.

The Huskies once again outshot the Axemen 10-9 in the second period, and took a 3-2 lead into intermission.

Huskies forward Bradey Johnson (Lindsay, ON) took over in the third period, scoring a pair of goals to secure the victory. Johnson's first goal came on the powerplay, as he skated in from the point, took a pass from Dunkley and patiently fired a low shot past Couture to extend the lead to 4-2, 9:02 into the third period.

Just over five minutes later, Johnson struck again, this time on an Axemen powerplay, taking a pass from Matthew MacDonald and sniping a wrist shot high to put the visitors ahead 5-2.

Acadia cut into the Huskies lead, with a powerplay goal from Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) making it 5-3. But Derek Gentile's empty net goal restored the three goal lead, sealing the Huskies 6-3 win.

Nathan Dunkley was named Player of the Game with two goals and an assist, while Bradey Johnson (two goals), Derek Gentile (one goal, one assist), Matthew MacDonald (two assists) and Reid Valade (two assists) all recorded multi-point nights for the Huskies.

Saint Mary's outshot Acadia 37-27 on the night, with Ben West (Barrie, ON) stopping 24 shots for the win, while Thomas Couture made 31 saves in defeat.
