U SPORTS No. 9 Capers top No. 8 Axewomen 1-0

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Makenna Bowser's (Bible Hill, N.S.)  goal at the 44th minute of the match gave the U SPORTS No. 9 ranked Cape Breton Capers a 1-0 win over the No. 8 Acadia Axewomen. The loss for the Axewomen is the first of the young season, while the Capers remain undefeated after four weeks.

Bowser's goal came from a header on a corner kick late in the opening half. Bowser led the Capers with three shots.

While the Axewomen were outshot in the opening half 8-6, the tides turned in the closing of the second half as Acadia pressured for the equalizer, landing 2 shots on goal from 6 kicks to the net.

"There are a lot of things to take away from this game. Knowing this is so early in the season, I think we know our capacity and we are not quite there yet. Games like this show you where you need to be and how you need to get there," said fifth-year captain Lauren Jodrey (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) following the loss.

First-year keeper Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, N.S.) kept five shots from the back of the net, while Caper Haley Kardas (Halifax, N.S.) was tested twice.

Defender Emma Clark (Valley, N.S.) was named the Subway Player of the Game for her defensive effort in keeping the Axewomen off the board, while Jodrey was named Acadia's Player of the Game.

The Capers improve to 5-0 and take sole possession of first place in the AUS standings. The Capers host StFX on Thursday, Oct. 6 – 5:00 pm.

Acadia drops to 3-1 and travels to Dalhousie on Sunday for a 1:00 pm start.
