Sea-Hawks win tightly contested battle against Huskies

The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 78-74 on Sunday afternoon in Saint John's, NL, despite a game-high 24 points from Huskies guard Sophia Widmeyer.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the duration of the game, featuring 16 lead changes, with the home team pulling away in the final minute to take the victory.

At the end of the first half the Sea-Hawks found themselves trailing the visiting Huskies by a score of 37-34 and remaining within striking distance as the game continued to wind down.

The Sea-Hawks would inch closer at the end of the third quarter, shrinking the Huskies lead to a single point, 58-57.

In the final frame the Sea-Hawks were able to manufacture a late lead thanks to a few big shots from three-point range for Alana Short and Rebecka Ekström, and they never looked back until the score clock reached zero.

The Sea-Hawks were led by great performances by Subway Player of the Game Alana Short (23 points) and Rebecka Ekström (18 points) who both provided clutch buckets as the game winded down. Point guard Inés Salat Margarit was once again controlling the pace of the game with her terrific ball-handling and playmaking, finishing with an impressive stat line of 10 points, four rebounds and eight assists, while being stout on the defensive end with three steals. Ekström and Short combined for seven of the Sea-Hawks ten three-point makes, with a few coming in the final minutes of the contest.

Huskies guard Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS) proved difficult to stop for the Sea-Hawks defence, scoring 24 points on efficient shooting and was one of the main reasons the game came down to the wire. Forward Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) was relentless on the glass for the Huskies, scoring 10 points and adding a game-high 12 rebounds, consistently keeping the Huskies alive for second-chance points. Huskies guards Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) added 11 points and four assists, while Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

After splitting the weekend series, the Huskies and Sea-Hawks both take a record of 1-1 into the second week of the season. The Huskies will return to Halifax for their home opener as they host crosstown rivals the Dalhousie Tigers on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. Atlantic. GET TICKETS
