McDonald scores twice as Huskies defeat Tommies 3-0 for third straight win

HALIFAX, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies won their third straight game, defeating the St. Thomas Tommies 3-0 on Saturday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

The Huskies outshot the Tommies 10-5 in the first period, but Tommies goaltender Caroline Pietroski (Etobicoke, ON) was up to the task, turning away all 10 shots faced, and the teams went into the first intermission tied 0-0.

Just over 12 minutes into the second period, the Huskies found the go-ahead goal, as forward Aimee O'Neill (Red Deer, AB) played a pass to reigning AUS MVP Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB), who fired a shot that skipped through the crease and onto the stick of Mary McDonald (Calgary, AB) who put it past Pietroski for her second goal of the season.

The Huskies outshot the Tommies 12-5 in the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

Just past the halfway mark of the third period, the Huskies doubled their lead, as Ellen Laurence picked up the puck in front of the Tommies net and fired four shots. The first three were blocked by Pietroski and the Tommies defenders, but the fourth one ended up in the back of the goal for Laurence's second of the season, extending the home team's lead to 2-0.

The Huskies struck again just over two minutes later, as they had a powerplay opportunity. Defenceman Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS) fired one of her trademark slapshots from the point, which was deflected by McDonald past Pietroski for her second of the night, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead with just under seven minutes remaining.

Huskies forward Mary McDonald was named Subway Player of the Game with two goals.

Huskies goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB), made 16 saves for her first career AUS shutout and third straight win, while Tommies goaltender Caroline Pietroski, stopped 28 shots.
