Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (1-4-0=2pts, 7th position) gave up two unanswered goals in the third period to fall 4-1 to the visiting University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (4-1-0=8pts, 2nd position) in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game Thursday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
The Panthers took advantage of many offensive occasions to get behind the Blue and Gold defensive and score four well spaced goals. Rachel Cole, in the first, Maria Clinton, in the second and Delaney Boehm and Kelly Clements, in the third, were able to get the puck in the net for the Panthers. Isadora Quirion (Janie Poitras) did get Moncton on the scoreboard at 1-1 early in the second, but it was short lived as the Panthers went ahead a minute later. Subway player of the game, Kaylee Dufresne, and Jenna Pellerin picked up two assists each. Audrey Berthiaume faced 26 shots in 48 minutes for the loss in nets before Mélodie Arsenault was sent in for the last 11 minutes. She saw four shots. Camille Scherger registered the win with 28 saves. Moncton was 0 for 4 on the power play and UPEI, 0 for 3.
"We lacked the drive and the aggressiveness on the ice," said a disappointed Moncton coach, Marc-André Côté. "We did not seem to be ready on the ice tonight. We will take measures to be ready for our Sunday game."
The Blue and Gold travels to Sackville on Sunday for an encounter with the Mount Allison University Mounties, at 3p.m. UPEI is in Antigonish to face the X-Women on Friday.
