X-Women beat Tigers 4-1 in mid-week action

Halifax, NS – The U SPORTS No. 4 ranked STFX X-Women improved their record to 16-2-3 atop the AUS conference with a 4-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum.
The X-Women took a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play thanks to goals from Ashlyn Garnett and Grace Gonyer.
Garnett scored the first X goal at the 11:54 mark on a nice back and forth passing play with Claire Carruthers.
Gonyer then tallied with 1:30 left in the period after she took a pass from Kya Moss in the neutral zone and brought the puck down the left wing, beating DAL netminder Madison King with a high shot over the shoulder.
Shots were even at nine apiece in the opening period.
Joanna Martinsen made it a 3-0 STFX lead at 3:13 of the second period, depositing a pass from Alexis Perry.
The Tigers outshot the X-Women 16-7 in the period and had three power play opportunities, but Biannca Zak was strong in the X net.
Just like the second period, the X-Women scored early in the third. Kameryn Lahey tipped in a Mackenzie Lothian shot from the point 2:21 in to put the visitors up 4-0.
Avery Holmes broke the goose egg for the Tigers when she scored a power play goal at 12:27.
Zak had 29 saves in the STFX net as final shote were 35-30 in favour of the X-Women.
Gonyer earned player of the game honours with a two-point night.
The X-Women will be back in action Friday night, January 24th when they host the UNB REDS at 7:00 pm in a battle of the top two teams in the AUS.
Dalhousie will play on home ice again Saturday night against Mount Allison.
