Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas Tommies defeat the Mount Allison Mounties 5-2 Friday night in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
The Tommies came out with a slow start allowing the Mounties to strike first at the 2:45 mark as Dallis Mackenzie picked up a loose puck in the Tommies corner and found Ashlyn Zaharia in front of the net who got her shot past first year Tommies goalie Tayler Cohen.
Tommies answered shortly after with a shot from Amy Dvernichuk high in the slot that was tipped by Lauren Smith (5:55) past the Mounties goalie Hanna Pagdato to make the score 1-1.
Late in the period, Mounties Ashlyn Zaharia (19:09) entered the Tommies zone and fired a puck that took an awkward deflection off of Cohen's stick and ended up in the back of the net leaving the Mounties with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period was a good battle between the two teams, but it was Aimee O'Neill (12:37) of the Tommies who came away with a goal taking a quick shot off a pass from Tommies defender Olivia Stock evening the score to 2-2. The teams entered the third period evenly scored.
The Tommies came out strong in the third period capitalizing on their powerplay as Aimee O'Neill (7:33) scored her second of the game to put the Tommies ahead. Tahlia Mallaley and Claire Nimegeers added some insurance to their lead scoring at the 12:56 and 18:20 mark to take the Tommies to their 5-2 win.
The Tommies outshot the Mounties 39-23.
The Tommies will turn around and head to Antigonish tomorrow to take on the StFX X-Women at 7:00pm.
The Mounties will head home tomorrow night where they will face the UNB Reds for a 7:00pm puck drop as well.
