Huskies top UNB 3-1

(Halifax, NS )The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting UNB Varsity Reds 3-1 Saturday afternoon in AUS women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.
UNB won the first set 25-22 before SMU took the final three sets 26-24, 25-22, 25-23.
The first set saw SMU jump out to two quick points generated by Celine Selby (Weyburn, SK). Tied 5-5, no team held a lead greater than four until Megan Kuciak`s (Ottawa) kill put UNB up 19-14.
Saint Mary's pulled within one several times late in the set (20-19, 21-20) and tied it up twice at 21-21 and 22-22. UNB closed out the set on a 3-0 run and took the set 25-22.
The Huskies went up 3-0 early in the second set and increased their lead to six points on a kill from Maddie Clarke (Ottawa) 7-1. UNB taking matters into their own hands, went on a 14-8 run, tying the set 15-15 on Janie-Eve Doucet`s (Fredericton, NB) kill.
The Varsity Reds took the next five of six points and went up 20-16 on another kill from Doucet. A seven point SMU run had the Huskies up 23-20. A Claire Richard (New Maryland, NB) kill evened the set at 24 all when Saint Mary's took the last two points and the set 26-24.
Ties at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 7,7, 8-8. 12,12, 13-13 and 14-14 saw a close third set play out before either team took a lead bigger than three when SMU did at 19-15. A 5-2 VReds run saw the set even for the ninth time at 21-21. The Huskies took the set 25-22 on a Erica Dowling (Lower Sackville, NS) kill.
The first two points of the fourth set when to Saint Mary's before a four point run saw the varsity reds climb to a 4-2 lead. UNB would extend their lead to as much as four (14-10) before the Huskies started to chip away at the VReds' lead.
A Jamie Rourke (Mission, BC) kill evened up the fourth set 15-15. A 7-3 Huskies run put SMU up four points at 22-18. A 5-3 UNB run down the stretch was not enough as the Huskies hung onto the fourth set win 25-22.
Saint Mary''s improves to 1-2 on the year while UNB drops to 3-5 and faces Moncton on the road November 21st.
THe Huskies host McGill Friday, November 20th in interlock action at 11 a.m. at the Homburg Center.
