Huskies ride second half surge to 80-57 win over Sea-Hawks

HALIFAX, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies used a third quarter run to take the lead and never look back, defeating the Memorial Sea-Hawks 80-57 on Monday night at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

The Huskies got off to a quick start, with a Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS) three-pointer putting the home team up 8-2, but the Sea-Hawks clawed back with six unanswered points to tie the game at 8-8.

The Sea-Hawks bench hit a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter - two from forward Hannah Green (Flatrock, NL) and one from guard Malva Gyllenhammar Ekelof (Malmo, Sweden) - but the Huskies bench responded with Aki Kobayashi (Halifax, NS) and Courtney Donaldson (Kelowna, BC) combining for seven first quarter points, and the Sea-Hawks took a 23-21 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second quarter, a lay-up by all-star guard Alana Short (Barrie, ON) put the Sea-Hawks up 32-24, giving them their largest lead of the night. But the Huskies quickly responded with back-to-back three's from Marlo Steenbakkers (Ottawa, ON) and Donaldson tying the game at 32-32.

The back-and-forth play continued throughout the second quarter, with a pair of Alyssa Jenkins (St. John's, NL) free-throws giving the Sea-Hawks a 40-38 lead at the half.

The Sea-Hawks were led by 10 points each from Short and Green, while the Huskies were led by 11 points from guard Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON), with Donaldson adding eight off the bench.

The beginning of the third quarter was a defensive battle, with the Sea-Hawks clinging onto a slim lead, before a three by Huskies forward Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) tied the game at 43-43.

That shot sparked a big Huskies run, as big defensive plays led to easy transition buckets, and they outscore the Sea-Hawks 18-3 over the next five minutes, with another three by Beaumont giving them a 61-46 lead.

The Sea-Hawks offence continued to sputter in the fourth quarter, as they didn't score for over three minutes, while the Huskies built up a 73-49 lead.

The Huskies went on to outscore the Sea-Hawks 19-8 in the fourth quarter, and win the game 80-57. Saint Mary's bench scored 18 of their 19 fourth quarter points, including five from Donaldson, who finished the game with 13 points in just 17 minutes of court-time, on her way to Subway Player of the Game honours.

Five Huskies scored in double-figures, led by Alaina McMillan who scored a game-high 16 points and added seven rebounds. Donaldson chipped in 13 off the bench and Beaumont, Kobayashi and Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS) each scored 10, while forward Katelyn Power (Bayside, NS) had an impressive defensive game with six points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

The Sea-Hawks were led by Alana Short's 14 points and six rebounds. Hannah Green chipped in 12 points off the bench and Alyssa Jenkins added 11.

The Huskies win improved their record to 9-4 on the season, tying them with the UNB REDS for second in the AUS standings – the Huskies will have a chance to tie first place Acadia Axewomen with a win tomorrow.

The Sea-Hawks loss snapped a six-game win streak, and dropped their record to 7-4 on the campaign.

The two teams will be back in action again Tuesday, tipping off at 3 p.m. at the Homburg Centre.
