White and Blue skate to lopsided victory over Mounties
The U SPORTS No, 5 ranked STFX X-Women extended their winning streak to 10 games with a lopsided 8-3 win over the Mount Allison Mounties
ANTIGONISH, NS - The U SPORTS No, 5 ranked STFX X-Women extended their winning streak to 10 games with a lopsided 8-3 win over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday night at the Charles V Keating Centre.
Gabriel Pizza Player of the game Anna MacCara (Trenton, NS) led the way with four points on the night, which saw eight different X-Women light the lamp.
With the win, the X-Women find themselves in sole possession of first place in the AUS standings, though UNB has a game tomorrow afternoon against UPEI in Charlottetown.
The Mounties came out with some jump in the first 20 minutes, and an early powerplay spelled danger for the home side, but STFX netminder Amaya Giraudier (Assiniboia, SK) fended off the barrage.
The X-Women had a powerplay of their own 10 minutes into the game, but Skye McDonald (Tor Brook, NS) stood tall for the visitors on a pair of solid chances. However, Kaya Moss (Port Moody, BC) found the back of the net for the X-Women shortly after the penalty expired, wiring home a wrister from the point.
That goal opened the floodgates, as Grace Gonyer (Nanaimo, BC), with a tight angled shot from in close for her first goal of the season, and Bree MacPherson (Antigonish, NS), launching one from the slot, each tallied in the next two minutes to make it 3-0 with six minutes to go.

The Mounties replied quickly though, with Ashlyn Zaharia potting one through traffic to put Mount Allison on the board. Chelsea Krahenbil (Winnipeg, MB) made it a one goal game with two minutes to go in the stanza, getting the last stick to the puck off a scramble while on a Mounties powerplay.
MacCara got the X-Women going early in the second period, popping in a rebound 41 seconds into the stanza. Alexis Perry (Brooklin, ON) made 5-3 five minutes later, notching her sixth of the season off a backhand.
Vivian Hinch (Vancouver, BC) with her second goal of the season, skating in from the neutral zone and slotting one low, and Claire Carruthers (Crossfield, AB), with her fourth of the campaign, rifling one short-side, capped off the four-goal period for the X-Women in the final two minutes.

Hanna Pagdato (Winnipeg, MB) relieved MacDonald to start the third period in net for the Mounties. Emily Foster got one back for the visitors six minutes into the period for another Mount Allison powerplay goal, but STFX's Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON) restored the five-goal lead two minutes later.
The games three stars went to first star MacCara (1G, 3A), second star Perry (1G, 1A) and third star Ireland McCloskey (Barrie, ON) who contributed pair of assists.
The X-Women return to the ice this Wednesday, January 22, when they head to Halifax to faceoff with the Dalhousie Tigers. The Mounties are back at it next Friday, January 24, when they host the Moncton Aigle Bleues.
