CAPERS drop second game in NL
(St. John's, NL)- Memorial was able to complete the sweep against the Cape Breton Capers after a ruthless win, 96-63.
After a sluggish start yesterday evening, the Hawks came out on a much better note on Sunday's competition. They were able to post 24 points in the first quarter, supported by Alana Short's bounce-back performance from last night. Short was able to finish the previous game with 18; she finished the first half with 14 points on Sunday's match. Another breakout performance was Rebecca Ekstrom who finished the first half with 16 on 4/5 shooting from deep. Like Short, she finished Saturday's game with 18 but finished the first half of Sunday's game with 16.
For the Capers, it was a struggle to keep up with Memorial throughout much of the first half. CBU finished the first half shooting a dismal 30% from the field, from three-point land, and attempting half as many free throws as the Hawks. The scoring the Capers were able to put was balanced between the starters (Letlow, Macleod, Smith, Ryan, Van la Parra). Memorial established a solid advantage heading into the second half leading 54-31.
Three of their starting five were able to post double-doubles (Alana Short – 16 points, 11 rebounds; Inés Salat Margrit – 16 points, 10 assists; Gabrielle Roche – 10 points, 16 rebounds). It was a surprisingly poor performance for Hannah Greene, though despite her fantastic display in last night's game, finished Sunday's performance having missed every shot she attempted. Gabrielle Roche stepped up in her place, earning herself player of the game commendations. Another highlight of Sunday's game was Rebecca Ekstrom's game-high 25 points.
