WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The first-place Dalhousie Tigers squeaked out a 3-2 win over the host Acadia Axewomen to keep their 11-game winning streak alive.
Lucy Glen-Carter (Toronto, Ont.) captured the Subway Player of the Match honours with 18 kills and a kill percentage of 0.222 along with 21.5 points.
A string of attack errors by the Axewomen pushed Dalhousie out to a 13-8 lead in the opening set. Carter's three kills that were split by two Acadia attack errors handed the Tigers an insurmountable 18-10 lead and an eventual 25-16 win.
The Axewomen came out strong in the second game, maintaining a lead for the entire set after a 4-4 tie. Sydney Zakutney (Ottawa, Ont.), Wesley-Ann Bailey (Ottawa, Ont.), and Taylor Witty (Dartmouth, N.S.) led the way with three kills each in the 25-15 second set win.
With both teams being handed easy set wins, the third game resulted in a much closer score with the Axewomen capturing a 25-21 hard-fought win.
Up against the wall, Dalhousie pushed out to an early 6-0 lead in the fourth frame, but that guaranteed nothing. Acadia fought back to close the lead to two points for the most part of the fourth set. Never letting go of the advantage, the Tigers posted a close 25-23 win to force a fifth and final game.
Tied at 11 in the final frame, Dalhousie took advantage of two attacked errors to nudge closer to a set and match win, but Acadia's Olivia Haley's (South Glengarry, Ont.) kill kept the lead at one – 13-12. A service error and a kill by Glen-Carter ended the set at 15-12.
Tiger Talia Vydykhan (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) recorded 10 kills, while Glen-Carter anchored the defense with 17 digs.
Axewoman Wesley-Ann Bailey posted a team-high 12 kills, while teammates Taylor Witty and Sydney Zakutney added 11 and 10 respectively. Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, Ont.) was a rock on the defensive end with 19 digs. Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, Ont.) quarterbacked the offense with 36 assists and posted a game-high three service aces.
The Tigers improve to 11-1, the one loss coming at the hands of the Saint Mary's Huskies on the opening weekend of the regular season, while the Axewomen slip to 8-3 and remain second in the AUS standings.
