X-Women move into 1st place with 2-0 shutout win over Tommies
With a hard fought 2-0 victory over the visiting St. Thomas Tommies, the X-Women hockey team picked up their 9th win in a row
ANTIGONISH, NS - With a hard fought 2-0 victory over the visiting St. Thomas Tommies, the STFX X-Women hockey team picked up their 9th win in a row Friday night at the Charles V Keating Centre. With the win, the X-Women pulled themselves into a two-way tie atop the AUS women's hockey standings with 31 points, the same as UNB.
The first period started out fast, with both teams threatening to score early. STFX got on the board seven minutes into the game, with Kalle Hastman (Calgary, AB) knocking home a loose puck in front of the net for her fourth tally of the season. Bree MacPherson (Antigonish, NS) had the assist.

Shots at the end of 20 minutes were 9-7 in favour of the Tommies.
ST. Thomas enjoyed a powerplay early in the second period, but STFX goalie Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) made a couple of strong saves to keep the door closed.
Midway through the period, Chloe Marshall (Calgary, AB) stopped two breakaways while on the penalty kill. STFX made a breakthrough a minute later though, with Mackenzie Lothian (Alliston, ON) one-timing a pass from Joanna Martinsen (Thunder Bay, ON) while on a 5-3 powerplay. Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) had the other assist.

Shots after 40 were 18-14 in favour of the X-Women.
The chippy play continued, as did the solid play of Marshall, who did her part in keeping the game close. Both teams pressed for a goal in the final 20 minutes, but Zak refused to concede and the game ended 2-0.
Zak earned the shutout with 20 saves on the night, while Marshall made 20 stops for the visitors.
MacPherson was named third star on the night while Anna MacCara (Trenton, NS) was the second star and Mozes was the first.
The X-Women return to action Saturday, January 18, when they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 7 p.m. The Tommies continue their road trip tomorrow, when they visit the Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7 p.m.
