WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The second-place Axewomen swept the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks in three sets to take the first match in a 2-match weekend.

A young Sea-Hawk team took to the court and challenged the Axewomen on every play.

Acadia pushed out to an early 9-4 lead, but Memorial fought back to 13-14 on a kill by Halle Wirth and an Acadia attack error.

Several service errors by the Sea-Hawks put the set out of reach 20-17. Two kills in the closing of the opening set by Eve Collombin (Victoria, B.C.) pushed the advantage to 24-17. Wesley-Ann Bailey added a kill for the 25-18 win.

Jumping out to a 10-4 lead, the Axewomen never let the lead drop below six points, eventually winning the second game 25-11. Rookie Sophie Edgar took advantage of her playing time and had two kills in a row in the closing moments of the second set and Jenna Guy (Conception Bay South, Nfld.) wrapped up the game with a kill.

The Sea-Hawks showed that they wouldn't roll over as easily as some may have thought heading into the third set. Down 4-1, Memorial tied the game at 6-6 on a Sarah Trowbridge (Sunnyside, Nfld.) kill. An Acadia attack error gave the Sea-hawks a lead and the one-point lead stuck until a ball handling error by Memorial came with a quick response by the Axewomen.

Two kills by the Subway Player of the Game, Eve Collombin, pushed Acadia into a 12-11 lead and the lead would change hands several times until a service ace by Sydney Zakutney (Ottawa, Ont.) gave the Axewomen a 17-15 lead that would grow to an eventual 23-16 lead.

"Keys to our win today was great defense and reception really picked up at the end along with serving tough," said Collombin when asked what were some of the keys to today's win.

Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, Ont.) wrapped up the set on a service ace, giving the Axewomen a 25-20 win and a 3-0 match win.

Collombin posted six key kills, while teammate Sydney Zakutney had a match-high seven kills and 10 points. Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, Ont.) quarterbacked the offense with 23 assists.

Kamryn Sanger (Paradise, Nfld) led the Sea-Hawks on offense with six kills and eight points. Karen Greek (Mount Pearl, Nfld.) added 17 assists.

The Axewomen improve to 10-3 and ream in second place with the SMU Huskies two points behind in the AUS standings. Memorial will search for their first win tomorrow. Both teams hit the court again tomorrow at Stu Aberdeen court beginning at 12:00 pm AT.
