Acadia's Veinot and Memorial's Long named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, NS) After big weekend wins for the Acadia Axewomen women's basketball and Memorial Sea-Hawks men's basketball, Jayda Veinot and Cole Long are your Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 20, 2022.

Jayda Veinot of the Acadia Axewomen women’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending February 20, 2022. 

A wing from Port Williams, Nova Scotia, Veinot helped lead the Axewomen to a home-and-home sweep against the CBU Capers over the weekend, averaging 33.5 points per game. The third-year science student contributed 31 points and 9 rebounds to Acadia’s 105-100 victory on Friday. On Sunday, Veinot’s 36 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists were key to an 89-62 win over the Capers.

Veinot currently leads the AUS with 23.6 points per game and sits second in field goals (90) and three-point shots made (22).

Cole Long of the Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending February 20, 2022. 

The fifth-year centre was a key factor on both ends of the court in the Sea-Hawks' two at-home wins over the STFX X-Men last weekend. Long averaged 22 points, 9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, with the Sea-Hawks coming out on top 90-84 on Friday and 105-88 on Saturday. He currently leads AUS in rebounds per game, sits second in points and points-per-game and has the third most steals and blocks in the league.

The Sea-Hawks’ eight-point weekend has propelled them into a tie for second place.
