Acadia's Longley and CBU's Coore named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S) After being named championship MVPs for their impressive performances at last weekend's Subway AUS Soccer Championships, the Axewomen's Grace Longley and Capers' Kairo Coore are your AUS Athletes of the Week.

Grace Longley of the Acadia women’s soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending November 7, 2021. 

The Acadia Axewomen captured their first AUS women’s soccer championship in 25 years on Sunday, with a 1-0 win over the StFX X-Women. Longley, a second-year kinesiology student, scored the lone goal and eventual game-winner at the 35-minute mark of the championship final and was named the Subway player of the game. She also recorded an assist in the Axewomen's 1-0 quarterfinal win over Dalhousie. For her efforts, Longley was honoured as the most valuable player of the 2021 Subway AUS Women’s Soccer Championship, presented by Bell. She was also named an AUS second team all-star earlier in the week.

With their conference win, the Axewomen will now prepare to head back to Cape Breton University for the 2021 U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championships, where they’ll be one of eight teams competing for a national title from November 18-21.

Kairo Coore of the Cape Breton Capers men’s soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending November 7, 2021. 

A first-year forward from Whitby, Ontario, Coore was named most valuable player of the 2021 Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championships, presented by Bell, after helping the Capers capture their fifth consecutive conference banner. He recorded four goals in two victories on home turf, scoring twice in the Capers’ 3-1 quarterfinal win over the UNB Reds and notching a pair in their 4-0 championship final victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Coore—who led the conference and U SPORTS with 15 regular-season goals—was also named an AUS first team all-star. The USPORTS no.1-ranked Capers will be one of eight teams that will compete at the 2021 U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship, hosted by the University of Carleton from November 18-21.
