Acadia's Collombin and Saint Mary's Sumarah named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, NS) After weekend sweeps for the Acadia Axewomen women's volleyball team and Saint Mary's Huskies men's hockey team, Taylor Collombin and Justin Sumarah are your Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 27, 2022.

Taylor Collombin of the Acadia Axewomen women’s volleyball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending February 27, 2022. 

The Axewomen took over first place in the AUS women’s volleyball standings after battling for two five-set wins on the weekend. Leading the charge for Acadia was senior outside hitter Taylor Collombin. A science student from Victoria, British Columbia, Collombin was named Subway Player of the Game in Friday’s win against the Dalhousie Tigers, posting a game-leading 25 kills (.344 efficiency), along with 21 digs, 2 solo blocks and a total 27 points.

She followed Friday’s performance with another 27-point match, contributing 22 kills (.386 efficiency), 3 service aces and 10 digs to Acadia’s win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Collombin leads the AUS in total kills (217) and kills per set (4.34)—the second-most in the country—and is fourth in both digs and solo blocks.

Justin Sumarah of the Saint Mary’s men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending February 27, 2022.

A first-year goaltender from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sumarah had an impressive showing in the first two AUS starts of his career, helping lead the Huskies to back-to-back wins over the weekend. In Friday’s 4-1 at-home victory over Moncton, the rookie saved 28 of 29 shots on goal.

Sumarah followed that standout performance with a huge 4-3 win over the U SPORTS top-ranked UNB REDS on Saturday, stopping 47 of 50 shots and earning the Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.
