StFX's Meropoulis and UNB's Harvey named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) StFX X-Women hockey player Tyra Meropoulis and UNB Reds men's hockey player Samuel Harvey have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Tyra Meropoulis
University: St. Francis Xavier University
Sport: Women’s Hockey
Position: Forward
Hometown: Edson, Alta.
Year of eligibility: Second
Academic program: BBA

Tyra Meropoulis of the StFX X-Women hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 19, 2019.

A second-year business student from Edson, Alta., Meropoulis had a five-point weekend and the vital goal in a shootout win for the X-Women this past week.

StFX downed the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies in overtime on Tuesday at home in Antigonish, N.S. Meropoulis had a goal and an assist in regulation, and went on to score the game-winning goal in the shootout. She was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.

Saturday, the X-Women downed the Moncton Aigles Bleues 6-2 at home. Meropoulis scored two goals—including the game winner—and added an assist. She was named Subway Player of the Game for the second straight game.

She currently leads the nation in both goals (with 21) and points (with 29). With this week's wins, the X-Women have clinched their spot in the 2020 AUS postseason.

Samuel Harvey of the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UNB Reds is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 19, 2020.

A first-year goaltender from Alma, Que., Harvey backstopped the Reds to two weekend wins.

On Friday, UNB downed the U SPORTS No. 6-ranked Acadia Axemen 2-1. Harvey made 25 saves in the game and went on to stop Acadia’s final two shooters in the shootout. He was named the third star of the game.

Saturday, he made another 23 saves and was named the game’s second star as the Reds downed the Saint Mary’s Huskies 4-1 in Fredericton, N.B.

Name: Sarah Charnock
University: Acadia University
Sport: Women’s Soccer
Position: Keeper
Hometown: Newmarket, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fifth

Sarah Charnock of the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Acadia Axewomen soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fifth-year keeper from Newmarket, Ont., Charnock backstopped the Axewomen to two weekend wins over the Dalhousie Tigers and the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Cape Breton Capers.

Acadia earned a 1-0 win over the Tigers Friday night in Wolfville, N.S. Charnock had two saves in the win.

She made another four saves Sunday as the Axewomen topped the two-time defending AUS champion Capers 2-1.  She was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.

Tane Caubo of the StFX X-Men soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 22, 2019.

A fourth-year arts student from London, England, Caubo had eight points in two games this weekend for the X-Men.

In StFX’s 6-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday in Sackville, N.B., he scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal. He was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Sunday in Fredericton, N.B., the X-Men tied the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked UNB Reds 3-3. Caubo had two goals and an assist in the draw.
