St. Thomas's Clarke and UNB's Bennett named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) St. Thomas Tommies women's hockey goaltender Abby Clarke and UNB Reds men's hockey forward Kris Bennett have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Name: Abby Clarke
University: St. Thomas University
Sport: Women’s Hockey
Position: Goaltender
Hometown: Springdale, N.L.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BA

Abby Clarke of the U SPORTS no. 5-ranked St. Thomas Tommies women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending March 10, 2019.

A fifth-year goaltender from Springdale, N.L., Clarke was named the AUS Championship MVP this past week as the Tommies captured their first-ever AUS women’s hockey title in program history.

Clarke led the AUS in saves throughout the playoffs and was instrumental in the Tommies’ dramatic comeback in the finals against StFX. In Game 3 of the series she stopped 39 of 40 shots in St. Thomas’s 2-1 victory.

Position: Forward
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Second
Academic program: BRSS

Kris Bennett of the U SPORTS no. 2-ranked UNB Reds men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending March 10, 2019.

A second-year forward from Brampton, Ont., Bennett was named Championship MVP for his efforts in the postseason as the UNB Reds captured the 2019 AUS men’s hockey title.

He had a goal and an assist in Monday’s night’s 5-1 win over StFX in the first game of the championship final series.  

He then scored a goal and added two assists in Game 2 which UNB won 7-1 to sweep the series.
