Axewomen remain undefeated, while Tigers earn weekend sweep

In Week 3 of the AUS women's volleyball season, the Acadia Axewomen earned their sixth straight win to remain atop the standings, while the Dalhousie Tigers played to three straight victories over the Memorial Sea-Hawks, extending their record to 5-1 on the season.

The Axewomen first played to a 3-1 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues Friday in Moncton. The visitors won the game by scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, and 25-23. Sydney Zakutney led the Axewomen with five kills and 24 digs, while Eve Collombin added 10 kills and 11 digs in the win. Anne Paquette finished with six kills and 14 digs for Moncton, while teammate Emily Robichaud finished with a game-high 26 digs. 

Saturday, the U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Axewomen (6-0) finished with a 3-0 victory over the Aigles Bleues by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-10. Zakutney finished with 11 kills and eight digs in the win, while Taylor Witty finished with 2 kills and 14 digs for Acadia. Robichaud had a game-high 17 digs for Moncton in the loss. 

The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks at Dalplex on Friday night by scores of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-23. Dalhousie's Alessandra Nadalini was named the Subway Player of the Game with nine digs from the Libero position. Karen Greek had 15 assists and one solo block to lead the way for the Sea-Hawks.

The Tigers then earned another 3-0 victory over the Sea-Hawks Saturday night by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-15. Lucy Glen-Carter paced the Tigers with nine kills and 10 digs, while Ella Hornby had six digs and two blocks. Kamryn Sanger, Nella Woelfel and Maria Moores each had three kills for the Sea-Hawks.

Dalhousie completed the three-game sweep of the Memorial Seahawks with a 3-0 win on Sunday. The Tigers won by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-20. Setter Brett Boldon took home the Subway Player of the game honors for the Tigers, finishing the game with a kill and 8 digs, while Sarah Trowbridge finished with six kills and five digs for Memorial in the loss.

After dropping the first two sets, the UNB REDS fought all the way back to take a thrilling 3-2 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies Friday night. The Reds won with scores of 22-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 19-17. Heather Benko led UNB with 19 kills, 11 aces, 13 digs and 31 total points to earn Subway Player of the Game. Olivia Bell and Meghan Bruhm led the Huskies with 17 kills apiece and 22.5 and 20.5 points respectively.

The UNB Reds and Saint Mary's Huskies engaged in another thrilling five-set Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball thriller on Saturday, with the Huskies winning 3-2. Huskies' left side Olivia Bell registered a match-high 25 kills and added 20 digs, earning Subway Player of the Game. Heather Benko led the Reds with 17 kills, while Bailey Lemieux had 12.
