Huskies top UdeM, remain in first place

(HALIFAX,N.S.) - Surviving a hard-fought third set, the SMU Huskies defeated the visiting Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-0 Friday night in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action.

The first set saw Moncton jump out to an early 8-3 lead before SMU tied it up at 18-18. The Huskies held on for the first setting with a 25-21 score.

Set two saw a 9-9 tie before SMU built a 20-12 cushion and win 25-21.

Set three had the Aigles Bleues throw everything at the Huskies. An early 4-4 tie saw Moncton build leads of 8-4 and 15-10. SMU tied up the third set 18-18 but trailed 18-21 before a Huskies time-out regrouped SMU.

A 21-21 tie saw SMU outscore UdeM 5-3 down the stretch for the win.

Genevieve LeBlanc paced UdeM with nine kills and 14 digs while SMU's Rachel Windhorst had 20 kills and Tessa Michaels finished with 19 digs.

Saint Mary's improves to 7-3 and sits in first place with 14 points on the year. UdeM falls to 3-8 and has six points.

Both teams finish their home-and-home series Jan. 17 in Moncton with a 2 p.m. game.
