Allison Loewen from the Mounties women's swim team has been named Mount Allison's nominee for the 2016 James Bayer Memorial Scholarship Award.

At the 2016 Subway AUS Swimming Championships, Loewen earned a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle, a silver as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team and a bronze as a member of the 4x100 freestyle relay team.

A third-year biochemistry student from Montreal, Que., Loewen has been named a CIS academic all-Canadian in her first two years with the program. She is on pace to repeat the feat again this season.

She was the recipient of the Dr. L.A. Goodridge Trust Scholarship in 2015, an award given to a Mount Allison student looking to pursue a career in medicine.

Loewen also dedicates her time volunteering both globally and in her community.

In 2015, she travelled to Kenya to volunteer at the Nyota Orphanage. She also travelled to Honduras as a member of the Global Brigades—the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization.

In May 2014, Loewen travelled to Kenya as a participant on the ME to WE volunteer trip.

She has also been involved in Mounties in Motion and Health Care Outreach with Mount Allison University, and serves as a middle school tutor as well as nursing home volunteer.

"Allison has been a wonderful ambassador for Mounties Athletics," said Mount Allison director of athletics Pierre Arsenault. "As busy as she is, Allison is very generous with her time when it comes to supporting others. We are very proud to nominate Allison for the AUS's James Bayer Award. We believe she is a tremendous candidate who would properly epitomize all the values this award has been established to create."
