(SYDNEY, N.S.) The no. 6-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks upset the no. 3 seed Dalhousie Tigers with a 4-0 win in the first quarterfinal of the Subway AUS Women's Soccer Championship Thursday afternoon.
The women's championship is being hosted concurrently with the men's by Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S.
AUS first team all-star Teri Murphy (St. John's, N.L.) opened up the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal at the end of the first half coming off a corner kick from fifth-year midfielder Maria Mackey (St. John's, N.L.). The Sea-Hawks went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Third-year midfielder Nicole Torraville (St. John's, N.L.) added to Memorial's lead in the second half with two insurance goals at 61:57 and 75:39.
The Sea-Hawks fourth and final goal was scored by second-year midfielder Lauren Taylor (St. John's, N.L.) after her shot on goal was nearly stopped but mishandled by second-year Dalhousie keeper Kate Fines (Halifax, N.S.).
With five shots and two goals, Torraville was named Subway Player of the Game.
Second-year striker Haley Birrell (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) earned player of the game nods in the loss for the Tigers.
The Sea-Hawks advance to face the host Cape Breton Capers in tomorrow's second semifinal matchup at 2 p.m.
The U SPORTS no. 2-ranked Capers finished first in the AUS regular season standings with a 10-1-1 record and are the defending AUS champions and U SPORTS silver medallists.
