(ST. JOHN'S, NFLD.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in AUS women's soccer at King George V Park.

Sea-Hawks rookie Emily Bailey (Mount Pearl, Nfld.) put up an impressive performance with a breakaway that netted Memorial's first goal of the game with just 1:05 on the clock. Bailey also took the second goal, and her eighth of the season in the 32nd minute. She was set up in front of the net by forward Jane Pope (St. John's, Nfld.).

In the 49th minute, second-year Jessie Noseworthy (St. John's, Nfld.) took advantage of Mount Allison's keeper stepping out from the box and put one in the back of the empty net three minutes into the second period.

Noseworthy and Bailey continue to be tied as the team's top scorers with eight a piece.

Midfielder Maria Mackey (St. John's, Nfld.) netted her first goal as a Sea-Hawk in the 64th minute bringing Memorial's tally to four.

Mount Allison's Courtney Buck (Darlings Island, N.B.) put one into the net for the Mounties, but with just six minutes to go, it wasn't enough to challenge the Sea-Hawks who took the win 4-1.

The Subway players of the game was midfielder Teri Murphy (Mount Pearl, Nfld) for the Sea-Hawks and striker Courtney Buck was player of the game for the Mounties.

Memorial (7-3-1) is now tied for second place in the AUS with Acadia (5-0-7). Memorial has two regular season games left, compared to Acadia who only have one remaining. The wins have clinched the Sea-Hawks a playoff berth.

The Mounties are now 2-5-4 with the weekend's loses and are currently in eighth place in the conference standings.

Sea-Hawks coach Walt Mavin was encouraged by the weekend's results.

"I thought we played two solid games this weekend against a physical Mount Allison team," he said. "In both games we got off to good starts, scoring the first goal in both games in the first two minutes, which certainly helped build some momentum early. Throughout both games we held some good possession with build-up starting in our defensive third and finishing with some good quality scoring chances."

He added, "It's encouraging to see our game continuing to get stronger as we head into our final two games of our regular season and then the following weekend with our playoffs at Dalhousie."

The Sea-Hawks will finish their regular season next weekend with a trip to play the UPEI Panthers (5-4-2) in Charlottetown on Saturday, followed by a game in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers (6-3-2) on Sunday.

Mount Allison plays next on Oct. 22 when they visit the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds for a 5 p.m. game.
