Capers tie Mounties 1-1 in Sunday soccer action

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - The high-powered offence of the Cape Breton University Capers women's soccer team hit a roadblock Sunday afternoon in Sydney, battling the Mount Allison Mounties to a 1-1 draw in AUS action at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex on the CBU campus.

The defending conference champion Capers now sit in tie for third place in the AUS standings with a 3-1-1 record. Mount Allison moves into seventh spot in the conference with a 1-2-3 record.

With 17 goals in their first four games, including five in a 5-0 shutout of Dalhousie Saturday, the Capers struggled to find an offensive rhythm Sunday against the tenacious Mounties.

After a scoreless first half, Chelsea Currie put the Capers on the board first, tallying her fourth of the season in the 63rd minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

It looked as if Currie's marker would hold up for the Capers, but Mount Allison took advantage of scramble in the 18-yard box late in the game, allowing Gillian Tetlow to bury the equalizer for the visitors in the 90th minute.

Tiffany O'Donnell made three saves in the CBU goal while Tessa Ritchie made seven stops for Mount Allison.

The Capers will be on the road this weekend when they travel to Halifax for a rematch with the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday and then to Antigonish for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the StFX X-Women. Both games begin at 1 p.m.

Mount Allison will host the UNB Varsity Reds Saturday at 2 p.m.
