Varsity Reds remain undefeated after 4-1 victory over UPEI

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - UNB's women's soccer team remains undefeated in regular season action after besting the UPEI Panthers 4-1.

The Varsity Reds scored first at around the 17th minute, when Lauren Cubbon beat UPEI goalie Ashley McKenna. It didn't take long for the Panthers to answer, and Jenna McDonald found the net for UPEI just over three minutes later.

The rest of the game was highly contested, but the scoreboard belonged to the Varsity Reds, with the next two goals coming from fullback Laura McNicholas at the 31st and 58th minutes. A fourth and final goal came from Samantha Lagacy in extra time.

It was another strong performance for McNicholas, who has made her presence felt in every game this year. And according to head coach Jonathan Crossland, it's also one way UNB is trying to improve this season.

"It's important for us to be creating opportunities in different ways," he said. "Laura and Hayley [Gates] played strong out there against a dangerous attack tonight. We saw a lot of positives out of her play on both sides of the ball."

McNicholas was named AUS Subway player of the game. Sami Jo Bell was in net for the V-Reds with five saves.

The Varsity Reds will travel to StFX to play next on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

UPEI plays next in Moncton this Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
