Axewomen down host Mounties 1-0 to advance to AUS semifinals

(MONCTON, N.B.) - In the second quarterfinal match of the 2013 Subway AUS women's soccer championship, the third-seeded Acadia Axewomen downed the sixth-seeded and host Mount Allison Mounties by a score of 1-0 Friday afternoon at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton, N.B.

In a physical contest played in challenging conditions, Acadia's Chantelle Cadeau (Coldbrook, N.S.) broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute as the Axewomen eliminated the host Mounties from the tournament.

With the wind at their backs in the opening half, Acadia was unable to solve Mount Allison keeper Robin Bessemer (Calgary, Alta.), who stopped all six first-half shots on goal.

The Mounties were unable to register a shot on goal in the opening half, but with a tail wind in the final 45 minutes, they were able to send a number of quality shots at all-star Axewomen keeper Caroline Wood (Coldbrook, N.S.), who stopped all seven shots she faced for the shutout.

Cadeau, named the Subway Player of the Game, finally found the back of the net with 15 minutes remaining in the game and the third-seeded Axewomen held the Mounties scoreless the rest of the way.

Mount Allison's Megan Entwistle (Saskatoon, Sask.) was chosen as the Subway Player of the Game for the hosts.

The Axewomen now advance to Saturday's semifinals where they will face the two-time defending AUS champions and No. 2-seeded Dalhousie Tigers at 2 p.m.
