(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Touted as the match between the undefeated, the CIS No. 3-ranked StFX X-Women proved they are as good as their ranking as they handed the CIS No. 7 ranked Acadia Axewomen a 45-17 loss.
StFX broke out into a quick 21-0 lead on tries from Breanna Allison, Tasha McKenzie and Danielle Robb between the 16 and 28 minute marks. All three tries were converted. With no time left on the clock in the opening half, the Axewomen finally jumped on the scoreboard when fourth-year backrow Janna Slevinsky added five points unconverted to close the first half at 21-5 for StFX.
Four minutes into the second half, Tasha McKenzie scored her second try of the night which was uncoverted. The Axewomen scored two trys five minutes apart starting at the 51 minute mark of the game when Michaela Haley and Tamara Dondi, along with a Erin Beazley convert, closed the gap to 26-17.
StFX would score 19 unanswered points in the closing 10 minutes of the second half to capture a 45-17 win in the first meeting of both teams this season. Catherine McKeigan, Breanna Allison and Miranda Sample scored the final tries.
Acadia's Erin Beazley scored one conversion, while StFX's Emma Taylor kicked three tries and teammates Anna Simonds and Lauren Agnew kicked the remaining two conversions.
Both teams will meet again this season at StFX on Friday, Oct. 3. StFX hosts UPEI next Saturday while the Axewomen head to Saint Mary's next Friday night at 7 p.m. Acadia drops to 2-1 and the X-Women improve to 3-0.
