Ben Berthiaume to lead X-Women hockey program

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - StFX Director of Athletics & Recreation Leo MacPherson is pleased to welcome Ben Berthiaume as the new head coach of the X-Women hockey program. Berthiaume takes over from David Synishin who recently stepped down from the head coaching role.

MacPherson comments, "We are very pleased to welcome Ben Berthiaume to the position of head coach of our X-Women hockey team. Ben knows our program inside and out and has contributed greatly to its success in the past and will do so again, now as head coach. We feel he is a great fit and the right person to lead our team forward."

Berthiaume has been a long-time assistant coach with the program, having been with the X-Women for the past 13 years. He served as the interim head coach for the 2014-15 season where he led the X-Women to a first place finish with a 20-4 record, winning the AUS championship and finishing fourth at the national championship.

The 2015 AUS Coach of the Year, Berthiaume has also been a mainstay with the annual X-Women hockey summer camp and has coached the Antigonish midget girls team. A native of Antigonish, N.S., he grew up playing in the Antigonish minor hockey system, as well as competing for the Nova AAA Midgets, Moncton Wildcats, Antigonish Jr. A Bulldogs and the StFX X-Men.

He is looking forward to stepping back into the head coaching position, commenting "I am very excited and thankful to StFX Athletics and Leo MacPherson to be given the opportunity to become the head coach of the X-Women hockey program."

"I have been an assistant coach for 13 years under David Synishin and had the privilege of working alongside him, continuing to grow as a coach. David has grown this program to be an AUS and national contender year after year and will be greatly missed behind the bench. I wish him all the success in the future with his new career and I am excited for the future success of X-Women hockey."
