Huskies down Mounties 5-2

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - In the second half season opener, the Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 5-2 at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.   

Caitlyn Schell (Waterford, Ont.) had three assists, and Brianna Soper (Oshawa, Ont.) had a power play goal, the last of four unanswered goals, at 7:11 of the third period to lift the Huskies over the Mounties and start 2015 with a victory.

Mount Allison opened the scoring when Jennifer Bell (Miramichi, N.B.) notched a marker at 15:19 of the first period.  Saint Mary's answered back when Mary Worndl (Kitchener, Ont.) scored to tie the game at 1-1 to end the first period.  I

Midway through the second, the Mounties took the lead when Rosie Heffernan (Oakville, Ont.) scored at 11:14, going up 2-1 over the Huskies.

 The Huskies responded when second-year forward, Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, N.S.) got a power play goal at 13:54 to tie the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes.

In the third period, the Huskies got off to a very quick start when Nicole Blanche (Dunville, N.L.) scored at 0:32 to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.  Saint Mary's added to the lead on a goal by Jenelle Rogers (Marystown, N.L.).  Rogers notched a marker at 4:41 to make the score 4-2.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 28-23 overall and Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, N.S.) made 21 saves to get the win in goal for the Huskies. Mounties goalie Kate O'Brien (Greenwood, N.S.) stopped 23 shots in the loss.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The Huskies host their crosstown rivals, the Dalhousie Tigers, at Alumni Arena and the  Mounties go up against the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in Antigonish.
