Rietveld scores decisive goal as Tigers beat Huskies 2-1

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-1 Wednesday night at Alumni Arena in the Huskies home opener for the 2014-15 AUS women's hockey season.

Subway player of the game Jesse Rietveld (Pelham, Ont.) scored the crucial goal in the second period of play.

Courtney Sheedy (Orangeville, Ont.) had the other goal to provide the Tigers' offensive punch in the contest.

Jessica Severeyns (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) made 28 saves to lead the Dalhousie defence.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 29-19. Sheedy's goal opened the scoring, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Rietveld gave Dalhousie a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Saint Mary's Laura Polak (Bedford, N.S.) tallied to get it to 2-1, but that was as close as the Huskies would get.

Polak's goal was assisted by Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, N.S.) and Mary Worndl (Kitchener, Ont.).

Justine McIntosh (East St. Paul, MA) stopped 17 shots in the Huskies net.

The Tigers' next game is on Oct. 24 against the St. Francis Xavier X-Women at 7 p.m. in Antigonish.

The Huskies host the Mounties in their next game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
