AUS Women's Basketball Weekly Round Up: Week 1

Thursday, Nov. 3

Saint Mary's 99 at Acadia 92 OT (Box Score)

In the AUS season regular season opener Thursday in Wolfville, N.S., the Saint Mary's Huskies earned a hard-fought 99-92 win in overtime over the Acadia Axewomen. Acadia held a slight edge 44-38 at halftime. The Huskies tied things up to end the second half tied 81-81 and went on to outscore the Axewomen 18-11 in overtime.

Saint Mary's Jenny Lewis led all scorers with 36 points. She also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Angelina Carvery had 29 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists, while two-time AUS defensive player of the year Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse had 14 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

2016 AUS MVP Paloma Anderson led the Axewomen with 30 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Friday, Nov. 4

StFX 45 at UPEI 52 (Box Score)

The UPEI Panthers downed the StFX X-Women 52-45 in their home opener Friday evening. The Panthers led 23-15 at halftime and never relinquished their lead through the second half. 

Carolina Del Santo led UPEI with 18 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Jenna Mae Ellsworth added 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.

Chelsea Provo led the X-Women with 14 points, five rebounds and an assist.

Cape Breton 68 at Dalhousie 55 (Box Score)

The Capers downed the Tigers 68-55 in their season opener Friday evening. Cape Breton led 32-25 at halftime and did not give up the lead throughout the second half. 

2016 AUS first team all-star Alison Keough led the Capers with 24 points, six rebounds and two steals. Valentina Primossi chipped in with 10 points, a rebound and a steal. 

Robertha Charles led the Tigers with 13 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Saturday, Nov. 5

Cape Breton 62 at Dalhousie 64 (Box Score)

The Tigers downed the Capers 64-62 in the second of two weekend matchups Saturday in Halifax. Dalhousie led 39-27 at halftime and maintained the lead through the second half, although the Capers managed to bring the score within two to end the game.

Shalyn Field led Dalhousie with 19 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Diedre Alexander added 14 points and three rebounds, along with four steals and an assist.

Alison Keough led the Capers once again with 24 points, nine rebounds and a steal.

UNB 65 at Memorial 52 (Box Score)

The Varsity Reds downed the Sea-Hawks 65-52 in Memorial's home opener Saturday evening in St. John's, N.L. UNB carried a 32-26 lead into halftime and never relinquished the lead through the second half. 

Hannah Currie led the Varsity Reds with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Grace Wade contributed another 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist. 

Sydney Steward led the Sea-Hawks with 18 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Acadia 61 at Saint Mary's 86 (Box Score)

The Huskies downed the Axewomen 86-61 in their second matchup of the week Saturday. Acadia held a 38-35 lead at halftime, but was outscored 24-6 in the third quarter and 29-17 in the final frame. 

Jenny Lewis led the Huskies again with 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Angelina Carvery had 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Paloma Anderson and Chanel Smith had 13 points apiece for Acadia.

StFX 43 at UPEI 71 (Box Score)

The Panthers downed the X-Women for the second time Saturday evening, outscoring StFX in every quarter: 13-8, 19-12, 22-9 and 17-14 for a 71-43 victory.

Carolina Del Santo led the Panthers again with 19 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. Jenna Mae Ellsworth added 15 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block.

Chelsea Provo led the X-Women once again with nine points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Sunday, Nov. 6

UNB 60 at Memorial 56 (Box Score)

The Varsity Reds topped the Sea-Hawks for the second time Sunday afternoon in St. John's, N.L. UNB led 27-14 at halftime. Memorial brought the game within one point in the final frame, but ultimately lost 60-56 to the visitors.

Nicole LaFleur led the Varsity Reds with 19 points, four rebounds and three steals. Laura Kaye added 12 points, a rebound and two assists. 

Graciela Diaz-Brito led the Sea-Hawks with 14 points, 12 rebounds, an assist and a block.
