AUS Women's Basketball Weekly Roundup: Week 9

Friday, February 5

UNB 48 at Saint Mary's 75 (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds travelled to Halifax to face the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night. The first quarter saw back-and-forth play from both sides of the court with the Huskies just edging the Varsity Reds 18-17 in points. The Huskies extended their lead throughout the second, outscoring the Varsity Reds 14-10 to hold a 32-27 lead at the half. The Huskies came out flying in the third, topping the Varsity Reds 32-15 in points to take a 64-42 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The fourth quarter saw low scoring from both ends of the court, with the Huskies coming out on top 11-6 in points, holding on to earn the 75-48 victory at home.

UPEI 73 at StFX 37 (Box Score)

The UPEI Panthers travelled to Antigonish on Friday to face the StFX X-Women. The Panthers came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the X-Women 22-7. The Panthers extended their lead throughout the second frame, topping the X-Women 16-12 in points to hold a 38-19 lead at the half. The X-Women struggled to get on the board in the third quarter, as they were outscored by the Panthers 15-4, extending the Panthers lead to 53-23 with just the final 10 minutes of regulation remaining. The Panthers held on throughout the fourth, outscoring the X-Women 20-14 to earn the 73-37 victory on the road. Tamara Tompkins led the Panthers in points with a game-high 18, adding four rebounds, four assists, and four steals, while Kolbi Roper led the X-Women with 9 points, adding 10 rebounds and three steals.

Cape Breton 61 at Acadia 64 (Box Score)

The undefeated Acadia Axewomen hosted the Cape Breton Capers in Wolfville on Friday. The Axewomen came out strong in the first quarter, holding a 24-15 lead over the Capers heading into the second frame. The Capers battled for the come-back in the second, topping the Axewomen in points 15-8 to cut Acadia's lead to 32-30 at the half. The Capers continued their come-back throughout the third, outscoring the Axewomen 17-12 to take a 47-44 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Axewomen came out strong in the fourth, taking a 58-57 lead with 04:42 remaining in regulation. The Capers were unable to catch the Axewomen in the final minutes, as Acadia held on for the 64-61 victory, extending their unbeaten streak to 15 games. Hannah Brown led the Capers in points with 18, adding 11 rebounds and 1 assist, while Paloma Anderson led the Axewomen with a game-high 25 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

UPEI 65 at StFX 70 (Box Score)

The StFX X-Women hosted the UPEI Panthers on Saturday for their second meeting of the weekend. The Panthers came out strong in the opening quarter, holding a 20-11 lead heading into the second frame. The Panthers extended their lead throughout the second quarter, topping the X-Women 15-12 in points to hold a 35-23 edge at the half. The X-Women battled hard for the come-back in the third, outscoring the Panthers 26-14 to tie the game at 49-49 with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The X-Women continued their come-back in the final frame, topping the Panthers 21-16 in points to earn the 70-65 come-back victory at home. Katie Donahoe led the Panthers in points with 20, adding nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, while Lindsay Lessard led the X-Women with a game-high 33 points, adding five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Dalhousie 62 at Memorial 55 (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers travelled to St. John's this weekend to take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks. After back-and-forth scoring in the opening frame, the Tigers edged the Sea-Hawks in points to hold a 17-15 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers extended their lead throughout the second, topping the Sea-Hawks 18-7 to hold a 35-22 edge at the half. The Sea-Hawks battled for the come-back in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 22-10 to cut Dalhousie's lead to 45-44. Despite Memorial's come-back efforts, the Tigers came out strong in the fourth, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 17-11 to hold on for the 62-55 victory on the road. Ainsley MacIntyre led the Tigers in points with a game-high 19, adding seven rebounds, while Sydney Stewart led the Sea-Hawks with 12 points, adding two rebounds.

Cape Breton 69 at Acadia 52 (Box Score)

The undefeated Acadia Axewomen hosted the Cape Breton Capers in Wolfville for the second time this weekend on Saturday. The Capers topped the Axewomen 16-9 in points in the opening quarter, while the Axewomen fought back in the second to top the Capers 14-11 in points in the second, cutting Cape Breton's lead to 27-23 at the half. The Capers extended their lead throughout the second half, outscoring the Axewomen 20-17 and 22-12 in the third and fourth quarters, consecutively, earning the 69-52 victory to hand the Axewomen their first loss of the season. Alison Keough led the Capers in points with a game-high 18, adding nine rebounds, one assist and three steals, while Paloma Anderson led the Axewomen with 15 points, adding four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

In their second meeting of the weekend, the Saint Mary's Huskies topped the UNB Varsity Reds 68-61. The first half saw very close play from both ends of the court, with the Huskies coming out on top outscoring the Varsity Reds 21-20 and 14-12 in the first and second quarters, consectutively. The Huskies held their lead throughout the second half, topping the Varsity Reds 16-15 and 17-14 in points consecutively in the third and fourth quarters, to hold on for the 68-61 victory at home. Laura Kaye led the Varsity Reds in points with a game-high 21, adding seven rebounds, and two assists, while Rachelle Coward led the Huskies with 13 points, adding one rebound and two assists.

Sunday, February 7

Dalhousie 77 at Memorial 80 (OT) (Box Score)

The Memorial Sea-Hawks hosted the Dalhousie Tigers for their second meeting of the weekend on Sunday. The Sea-Hawks topped the Tigers 19-15 in points in the first quarter, while the Tigers fought back in the second, just edging the Sea-Hawks 19-18 in scoring to cut Memorial's lead to 37-34 at the half. The Sea-Hawks extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 24-17 to hold a 61-51 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Tigers fought for the come-back in the fourth, to take a 70-68 lead from a three-point shot from Megan Thompson with just 01:44 remaining in the game. The Sea-Hawks battled back, as a jump shot from Lindsay Taylor tied the game at 72-72 with just 11 seconds remaining, forcing the game into over-time. In the extra frame, the Sea-Hawks edged the Tigers 8-5 in points, to earn the 80-77 victory at home. Ainsley MacIntyre and Megan Thompson led the Tigers with 15 points each, with MacIntyre adding nine rebounds and one assist, and Thompson adding three rebounds and five assists. The Sea-Hawks were led by Sydney Stewart who posted a game-high 26 points, adding four rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
