AUS Women's Basketball Weekly Roundup: Week 3

Wednesday, November 18

StFX 74 at Acadia 90 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axewomen hosted the StFX X-Women in their home-opener on Wednesday evening. The Axewomen came out strong in the first quarter, while the X-Women struggled to get onto the board, allowing Acadia to hold a 30-5 edge after the first frame. The X-Women picked up the pace in the second quarter, with both teams posting 18 points each, with the Axewomen holding a 48-23 lead at the half. The third quarter saw Axewomen posting 27 points, while the X-Women put 26 points on the board, for a 75-49 Axewomen lead. The X-Women outscored the Axewomen in the final quarter 25-15, but it would not be enough as Acadia earned the 90-74 victory over StFX. Paloma Anderson led the Axewomen with a game-high 27 points, adding six rebounds, five assists, and six steals, while Lindsey Lessard led the X-Women with 26 points, adding five rebounds and one assist.

Dalhousie 38 at Saint Mary's 61 (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies hosted the Dalhousie Tigers on Wednesday night. The Tigers held a 16-10 lead after the first quarter, but struggled to get on the board in the second, only posting two points, while the Huskies posted 18, to hold a 28-18 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Huskies continued to dominate over the Tigers, outscoring Dalhousie 24-10, putting them ahead 52-28 going into the final quarter. After a low-scoring fourth, the Huskies held on to earn a 61-38 victory over the Tigers. Rachelle Coward led the Huskies with a game-high 23 points, adding two rebounds and one assist, while Tessa Stammberger led the Tigers with 13 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.

Friday, November 20

Cape Breton 74 at UPEI 65 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers travelled to Charlottetown on Friday night to take on the UPEI Panthers. The Panthers battled hard in the first half, emerging with a 39-32 lead at halftime. But the visiting Capers dominated the third and fourth quarters 22-13 and 20-13 respectively, to come away with the win. 

Cape Breton was led by 2013-14 AUS rookie of the year Alison Keough who posted a double-double with 24 points, 14 rebounds, two steals and an assist. Colleen Keane added 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal for the Capers. The Panthers were led by Tamara Tompkins, Anne Kibeard and Katie Donahoe who posted 16, 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Saturday, November 21

UNB 85 at Memorial 80 (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds travelled to St. John's on Saturday to face the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The Varsity Reds led 43-36 at halftime and though the Sea-Hawks made it a one-possession game several times throughout the second half, they were unable to gain the lead. UNB was led by Laura Kaye who had 17 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. Teammate Rachel Cleary chipped in with 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Sydney Ezekiel led the Sea-Hawks with an impressive 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Cape Breton 65 at UPEI 59 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers completed their weekend sweep of the host UPEI Panthers Saturday evening in Charlottetown. The Panthers led 35-32 at halftime but were outscored 33-24 in the second half. Colleen Keane led the Capers with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. Teammate Jalynn Skeir added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Panthers starters Kiera Rigby, Anne Kiberd, Tamara Tompkins and Jane McLaughlan had 14, 13, 12 and 11 points respectively.

Dalhousie 66 at Acadia 67 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axewomen hosted the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night. The lead changed hands half a dozen times in a hard-fought fourth quarter before the home team came away with the eventual win. Alexandra Berry led the Axewomen with a double-double, posting 16 points and 15 rebounds. Paloma Anderson added 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Tessa Stammberger posted 23 points and six rebounds in the loss for the Tigers. Ainsley MacIntyre chipped in with 10 points.

Sunday, November 22

UNB 84 at Memorial 65 (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds completed a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea-Hawks Sunday morning in St. John's, N.L. The home squad led 20-19 at the end of the first quarter and 37-35 at halftime. The Varsity Reds found their groove in the third, outscoring Memorial 28-13 to take a lead they would not relinquish. Laura Kaye led UNB with 15 points and two rebounds, while Hannah Currie added 13 points and six rebounds. Nicole LaFleur posted 12 points and eight rebounds and Rachel Cleary added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Kiley DeLong anchored the defence with 10 defensive rebounds.

Sydney Stewart led Memorial with 12 points and four rebounds. Hallie Nickerson added another 12 points off the bench. Sydney Ezekiel  added 11 points and nine rebounds.
