(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball team bested the Varsity Reds 70-58 in an important four-point game in front of 300 people at the Richard J. Currie Center.
Memorial started the game with a 10-2 run which the Varsity Reds would immediately answer, ending the first quarter with the lead, 15-11.
The game would go back and forth like this until early in the fourth quarter where the Sea-Hawks would open up an 18-6 run which gave Memorial a big lead which UNB would not be able to overcome.
UNB led the game in most statistical categories but failed to finish their chances. They shot only 27.5 per cent from the floor compared to 43.4 per cent for Memorial.
"We were rushing and panicking," said UNB head coach Jeff Speedy following the loss. "We didn't take advantage of the really good offense we were running."
The Sea-Hawks also shot 45 per cent from three, hitting four threes in the fourth to end UNB's hopes of moving up in the standings before playoffs.
"It's not a surprise," said Speedy on Memorial's three-point shooting. "We let the three-point shooters shoot threes. No one who made a three or took a three was a non-three-point shooter. We have to be smarter and do a better job. It's the little detail that makes a big difference."
Subway player of the game for Memorial was Tianna Brown (Douglas, Arizona) who had 13 points and 10 rebounds in only 22 minutes.
Lindsay Taylor (Waterloo, Ont.) and Kelia Pond (Goulds, N.L.) had efficient games for Memorial, each hitting three threes on a combined 12 attempts.
Subway player of the game for UNB was Kiley DeLong (St. John's, N.L.) who had a double-double consisting of 11 points and 14 rebounds. Rachel Cleary (Brantford, Ont.) and Grace Wade (Moncton, N.B.) had good games as well with lines of 12-9 and 14-7-2 respectively.
The two teams will play again Saturday at noon. This will be the last game of the regular season.
