Tigers earn win over X-Women

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the StFX X-Women 75-58 in AUS basketball action Tuesday night.

Subway player of the game Courtney Thompson (Saint John, N.B.), with 30 points, led the Tigers to the road victory in front of more than 200 fans at Oland Centre.

The league's leading scorer, who shot a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line, added three rebounds and four assists.

On the strength of a 16-0 run, the Tigers took control of the game with a 24-6 lead after the first quarter.

Dalhousie, who led by as many as 26 points, were ahead 37-17 at halftime.

In the second half, the X-Women outscored the Tigers 41-38, but they could not overcome the huge early deficit.

Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.) led three X-Women in double digits with 15 points. She added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, N.S.) and Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, B.C.) notched 13 and 10 points, respectively.

X-Women player of the game Courtney Kilyk (Fonthill, Ont.) chipped in seven points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

The Tigers outrebounded the X-Women 32 to 27, while Dalhousie committed 19 turnovers compared to 18 for StFX.

Tessa Stammberger (Kensington, P.E.I.) scored 17 points for the Tigers, while adding six rebounds and four assists.

Rebecca Nuttall (Riverview, N.B.) contributed eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists to the winning effort.

With the victory, the Tigers improve to 11-6, while the X-Women fall to 4-13.

The X-Women are back on the court Friday, Feb. 13, when the UNB Varsity Reds visit Oland Centre.

"We need to push the ball more and play better in transition," Lessard said after the game, adding the team's execution must also improve.

The Tigers return to action Saturday, Feb. 14, when they host the Varsity Reds at Dalplex in Halifax. Tip-off for both games is 6 p.m.
