Seahawks edge Huskies

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the SMU Huskies 62-61 on Saturday night in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

The first half was a tale of different quarters as Saint Mary's jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter cushion and a 23-14 Memorial second quarter trimmed the Huskies lead to 35-33 at half.

Memorial outscored Saint Mary's 14-11 in the third quarter for a 47-46 lead after 30 minutes.

The final two minutes of the fourth quarter saw Memorial up 59-58 when a SMU steal and layup gave the Huskies a 60-59 lead. A Sea-Hawks three pointer put them up 62-60 with 36.1 seconds left.

A Memorial foul put the Huskies on the foul line for the win but went 1-for-2 and trailed Memorial 62-61.

A Sea-Hawks turnover gave SMU a chance for the win with 12.2 seconds left but two missed three pointers closed out the game for the Sea-Hawks win 62-61.

Memorial's Tianna Brown (Douglas, Arizona) had a double-double in the win with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Kelia Pond (Goulds, N.L.) added 13 points.

Megan Robinson (Waterloo, Ont.) chipped in 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting beyond the three point line for the Sea-Hawks, who improved to 8-7 and earned four points in the standings with the win.

Saint Mary's falls to 12-3.

Bedford, N.S. native Laura Langille added her own double-double for SMU with 14 points and 11 rebounds on 3-for-4 three-point shooting while Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) and Carlie Nugent (Richmond Hill, Ont.) added 10 points apiece.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Shanicka Wood (Ajax, Ont.) with nine points, Emma Valikoski (Espoo, Finland) with seven, Katrina Murrell ( Markham, Ont.) with six and Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) with five points. Alexandra Smye (Halifax, N.S.) finished with two rebounds.

Saint Mary's returns to action Sunday at noon versus Memorial for another game worth four points in the AUS standings.
