Tigers knock off Capers 72-52

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - After a delayed start to the game due to weather, the Dalhousie Tigers picked up a big win over the host Cape Breton University Capers in AUS women's basketball action on Friday night.

The Tigers stormed off to a terrific start at Sullivan Fieldhouse and knocked off the Capers by a score of 72-52.

Courtney Thompson played outstanding basketball for Dalhousie, scoring a game-high 29 points and pulling in five rebounds in the victory. Tessa Stammberger also produced for the Tigers, putting up 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Kristy Moore added 11 points.

The reigning CIS rookie of the year, Alison Keough, led the way for the Capers in the loss. Keough had a team-high 15 points to go along with four rebounds. Colleen Keane had a rough night from the field, shooting 4-for-13 in the game, but still managed to contribute 13 points to Cape Breton's scoring effort.

The game was delayed due to Dalhousie's late arrival because of the terrible weather conditions on the drive from Halifax to Sydney. However, when the game commenced, Dalhousie was ready to play. The Tigers jumped to 14-4 lead early in the game and the Capers trailed for the remainder of the contest.

The Tigers outshot the Capers throughout the game. Dalhousie shot 47 per cent from the field, while Cape Breton shot just 30 per cent.

However, the fans at Sullivan Fieldhouse were treated to something special in the matchup on Friday night. Four Cape Breton natives laced up their shoes for the game and showcased the great talent that is coming out of Cape Breton high school girls' basketball.

Keough of Riverview High School and Hannah Brown of Memorial High School were the Cape Breton natives suiting up for the Capers, while Ainsley MacIntyre of Riverview and Hollie MacDonald of Memorial returned home as members of Dalhousie.

The Capers will seek a better result when they play the Tigers again at Sullivan Fieldhouse on Saturday. The game is set for 2 p.m.
