(ST. JOHN'S, N.L.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the StFX X-Women 68-61 on Sunday afternoon in AUS women's basketball at the Field House. The victory was the second of the weekend for the Sea-Hawks over the visiting X-Women.

The game was tightly contested throughout all four quarters but it was the X-Women who took the opening quarter by one point over Memorial's 15. Half way through the second, the Sea-Hawks were up by seven points but StFX came back to close the gap, mostly in thanks to third-year forward Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.). Going into the half, the scoreboard was 30-29 in favour of the home team.

Memorial stepped up their game in the third quarter, out-scoring StFX 22 to 16. The difference for the Sea-Hawks was at three-point distance where they were 5-for-8, three of which came from point guard Megan Robinson (Waterloo, Ont.) alone. Both teams contributed 16 points in the last quarter which saw StFX shoot 100 per cent from the free throw line, but it wasn't enough to break the home team. Memorial took the game 68-61, sweeping the weekend.

Robinson had a team-high 24 points in the win, while Subway player of the game Kelia Pond (Goulds, N.L.) provided another 15 points and four steals.

Lessard led the X-Women, with 24 points and seven rebounds. Senior post Emma Taylor (Scotsburn, N.S.) contributed 15 off coach Augy Jones' bench.

The Sea-Hawks improve to 7-7 with the win while the X-Women fall to 4-11 on the season. Memorial is now tied in the fifth playoff position with the Varsity Reds who have played one game more.

Memorial plays next in Halifax with two four-point games against the Saint Mary's Huskies on Feb. 7 and 8. StFX will host Saint Mary's on Wednesday for two points.
