UNB splits weekend by edging Axewomen 58-55

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) – The Acadia Axewomen and UNB Varsity Reds squared off for the second of two back-to-back weekend games. It was another tight matchup that came down to the final minutes of play for a decisive 58-55 UNB victory.

The Axewomen defeated the V-Reds 77-72 the night before.

The V-Reds came out looking to push the pace on the second night of the back to back matchup and it paid off. The Axewomen struggled to find the back of the net in the first quarter scoring only 12 points and allowing 15 UNB points.

Acadia tightened up the defence in the second frame holding the V-Reds to only seven points and notching 13 of their own to claim a 25-22 advantage entering halftime. Subway player of the game Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) had six points in the quarter for the Axewomen. Anderson finished with 17 points and seven steals.

Acadia stretched their lead to seven, but an 8-2 UNB run erased the lead. The Axewomen held a two-point advantage 40-38 entering the fourth and final frame.

In the fourth quarter UNB would reclaim the lead, led by Grace Wade (Moncton, N.B.) who notched nine fourth quarter points and 15 on the night. The V-Reds lead by as many as six with 1:30 remaining before Anderson would net four free throws for Acadia and close to within three. The Axewomen would have the final shot but were unable to convert the three-point attempt to tie the game and fell 58-55.

Allie Berry (Yarmouth, N.S.) added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Acadia while Katie Ross (Bedford, N.S.) and Chanel Smith (Halifax, N.S.) chipped in eight a piece.

Kylie Delong (St. John's, N.L.) contributed 13 points and 13 points for the V-Reds and Laura Kaye (Fredericton, N.B.) added nine.

Acadia heads to Dalhousie on Tuesday in a makeup game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather before travelling to PEI for a Friday night matchup against the Panthers. UNB heads home to face UPEI next Saturday.
