Tigers topple Huskies 70-63

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Courtney Thompson's double-double stole the show in Dalhousie's 70-63 AUS women's basketball win Saturday afternoon over the CIS No. 10-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies.

The Saint John, N.B. native chipped in 28 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the Tigers, whose win was worth four points in the standings.
Dalhousie improves to 9-4 and moves into a tie for first place with Saint Mary's (11-2).
The Tigers used a 9-0 first quarter run to build a 24-7 lead after 10 minutes.
A 7-0 Huskies run in the second frame trimmed Dal's lead to 26-14 but Dalhousie ended the half on a 6-2 run of their own for a 38-25 locker room lead.
SMU won the third quarter scoring 17-15 and chipped away at the Tigers' lead 53-42.
The Huskies used a 10-0 opening quarter run to trail 53-52 at the 7:30 mark.
A quick Dal timeout saw the Tigers regain their 11-point lead with their own 10-0 run, 63-52.
A Huskies basket made it 65-61 Dal as the Tigers made timely shots down the stretch for the 70-63 win.
Dalhousie's Tessa Stammberger (Halifax, N.S.) also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Kristy Moore (Shad Bay, N.S.) added 10 points for the Tigers.
Laura Langille (Bedford, N.S.) paced the Huskies with 18 points and five rebounds while teammates Shanieka Wood (Ajax, Ont.) and Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) rounded out SMU's double-digit scorers with 14 and 10 points respectively.
Also scoring for the Huskies on the afternoon were Emma Valikoski (Espoo, Findland) with eight points, Alexandra Smye (Halifax, N.S.) with six and Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) with five. 
 
Saint Mary's returns to action on the road Wednesday versus StFX for a 6 p.m. game.
Dalhousie will host Acadia this Tuesday, Feb. 3 in a game rescheduled from last week due to weather.
