Tigers top Sea-Hawks 69-62

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers (8-4) moved into a three-way tie for second place in the AUS with a 69-62 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks (5-7) on Sunday afternoon at the Dalplex.

The two teams split a two-game series this weekend after the Sea-Hawks edged the Tigers 66-65 the day before.

AUS leading scorer Courtney Thompson had a game-high 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead the Tigers in the victory, while Kristy Moore added 14 points and Tessa Stammberger added nine points and six rebounds.

Tianna Brown came up just short of a double-double for the Sea-Hawks, registering eight points and adding 10 rebounds. Kelia Pond had a team-high 11 points in the loss, while Sandra Amoah and Lindsay Taylor each added 10 apiece.

The Tigers defence limited the Sea-Hawks to a 34.5 per cent field goal percentage in the game, while they shot an impressive 45.5 per cent themselves.

The Tigers were red-hot to start the game, surging to a 12-0 run as they didn't allow the Sea-Hawks to score a single point in the first five minutes of the game.

The Sea-Hawks regrouped in the latter half of the quarter, and they went on a 15-4 run to finish the quarter only down by just one point.

The Sea-Hawks took the lead early in the second quarter, but it was short-lived as Kristy Moore and Tessa Stammberger hit back to back threes to put the Tigers back on top 24-21.

The Tigers would lead by as many as 11 points in the quarter, but the Sea-Hawks back to trim the lead to five points as they headed into halftime.

The Tigers pulled away in the second quarter, and although the Sea-Hawks made it as close as seven points in the last minute. That's as close as they would get as the Tigers came away with the 69-62 victory.

The Tigers will be back on the court on Tuesday when they host the Acadia Axewomen, while the Sea-Hawks will take on the StFX X-Women at home on Saturday. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
