CIS No. 7 Huskies remain undefeated while Axewomen seek first win

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - The Acadia Axewomen (0-10) took on the first place and CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary's Huskie's (9-0) in Wednesday night basketball action at War Memorial Gymnasium. A recent meeting of both teams last Tuesday resulted in a 56-49 edging of the Axewomen in Halifax.

After trailing by only three with under a minute remaining in the game, the Axewomen fell hard in a tough fought 61-56 battle to the visiting Huskies.

The first quarter focused on defence with Saint Mary's claiming the slight edge 14-11. Acadia stayed within striking distance to end the half down only down 28-22.

Acadia's Subway player of the game, Chanel Smith (Halifax, N.S.), had a huge first half for Axewomen, netting 16 points, 12 of which game from the three-point line. Smith also pulled down seven rebounds in the opening half, finishing the game with 21 points and 14 boards in the loss. 

The Axewomen kept up the defensive effort in the second half and trailed 40-36 entering the final frame. In the fourth, With a minute remaining, Acadia closed the gap to three points. An untimely foul sent Saint Mary's to the charity stripe where Laura Langille (Bedford, N.S.) would seal the game 61-56 with ten seconds remaining.

First-year guard Paloma Anderson (Pheonix, Arizona) had two points in the game, before scoring the last eight straight points for the Axewomen. Anderson had 10 on the night, while teammate Allie Berry (Yarmouth, N.S.) also chipped in 10 points. Aprille Deus added 11 and three assists.

Huskie guard Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.), named the Subway player of the game, posted 20 points, six steals and four rebounds. Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse  (Montreal, Que.) added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Laura Langille added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Acadia, who are searching for their first win this season, travel to Antigonish to take on StFX on Friday and then visits Dalhousie for a four-point matchup on Tuesday. Saint Mary's heads to UPEI for a four-point game Friday and then travels to StFX for a Wednesday night matchup.
