Capers' win streak at five after win over StFX

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - The Cape Breton University Capers won their fifth consecutive game on Tuesday night in their match-up with rival, StFX at Sullivan Fieldhouse. The Capers knocked off the X-Women by a score of 67-56, giving them their second win of the year against the X-Women.

The Capers' frontcourt trio of Colleen Keane, Allison Keough and Rasheeka Gunn continued their stellar season and paced the offence on Tuesday night.

Keane was named Subway player of the game for the second consecutive game, dropping 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Rasheeka Gunn had an impressive stat line of 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. The Capers' star centre, Allison Keough was also great on Tuesday, contributing 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Kolbi Roper was a bright spot for the X-Women in limited minutes on Tuesday. Roper was in foul trouble for most of the contest and played just 23 minutes, but scored 14 points and shot 70 per cent from the field. Lindsay Lessard led the team in minutes with 35, and put forth a solid effort with 13 points and eight rebounds on the evening.

The Capers were in control for the majority of the game thanks to their outstanding defence, and jumped to a nine-point lead at halftime. Cape Breton led by as many as 18 points and cruised to victory in the second half.

The biggest difference in the game was StFX's struggle dealing with the full court pressure from CBU. Cape Breton scored 26 points off of 28 StFX turnovers, leading to the victory.

"We pressed them and caused a lot of turnovers, a lot of rushed offence and that was key for us," said Capers' head coach Fabian McKenzie. "I thought we were a half-step behind in some areas, but we grinded out a win today and we'll take them when you win ugly."

The win on Tuesday gave CBU their fifth win in a row and moved them to 7-5 on the season, which is good for a first-place tie with Saint Mary's in the AUS standings.

The Capers will face UNB on Friday in New Brunswick, and look to avenge their 70-62 loss before the Christmas break.

Meanwhile, StFX host the winless Acadia Axewomen on Friday and will look to shake off their two losses in a row.
