Acadia falls short on comeback versus StFX X-Women

(WOLFVILLE N.S.) - The Acadia Axewomen (0-7) were back at home after the holidays taking on the StFX X-Women (3-5) Saturday night at War Memorial Gymnasium.

Despite being down only a single point entering the fourth quarter, the Axewomen would fall 78-68 to the X-Women who shot 57.6 per cent from the field on the night.

StFX went on a 10-2 run to start the game, forcing a quick Acadia timeout. Out of the timeout, rookie guard Lauren Joudrey would nail a three-pointer for the Axewomen. Down by as many as nine, Acadia trailed 26-20 going into the second frame.

In the second quarter, it was second-year guard Katie Ross who would have the hot hand for the Axewomen. Ross had seven second quarter points for the Axewomen and 12 on the night.

The second quarter was a low scoring affair for both sides with StFX holding the 13-11 edge in the frame.

The X-Women's Lindsay Lessard, named the Subway player of the game, led all scorers at half with 13 points on 6-for-7 from the floor. Lessard finished with a double-double including 24 points and 10 rebounds. StFX held a 39-31 advantage heading into the intermission.

Acadia came out strong in the third quarter finishing off the frame on an 8-0 run and closing the StFX lead to 52-51. The X-Women rattled off nine straight points to start the final frame to go up by 10.

The Axewomen cut the lead to three with 4:20 remaining in the game on a three by Chanel Smith. But, StFX guard Melissa Gottschall would answer back with a three of her own and seal the win for the X-Women.

Acadia's Subway player of the game, Paloma Anderson, had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals in her home debut. Smith had 17 points on the night and Joudrey chipped in 10.

Gottschall had 13 for the X-Women and Kolbi Roper added a 14-point and four rebound effort in the win.

StFX will take on Dalhousie this Tuesday in a four-point matchup, while the Axewomen face the first place Saint Mary's Huskies before travelling to Cape Breton on the Saturday for a four-point game.
