Panthers cruise to 76-48 road win over X-Women

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - After the StFX X-Women (2-4) scored the opening basket of the game, the visiting UPEI Panthers (4-3) went on an 11-0 run and never looked back as they cruised to a 76-48 win in AUS basketball action Friday evening.

More than 300 fans at Oland Centre watched former X-Woman Anne Kiberd (Halifax, N.S.) key the first quarter run with two of three consecutive three-pointers for the Panthers. Teammate Darcy Zinck (Halifax, N.S.) had the other bucket from downtown in the early spurt.

The Panthers led 23-8 after the first quarter.

The X-Women scored the final five points of the second quarter, but they continued to trail 36-21 at halftime.

After StFX cut the lead to 13 (40-27) early in the third quarter, but three-point shots from Kiberd and Zinck sparked a 16-0 UPEI run to give the visitors a 56-27 advantage.

Kiberd, the Subway player of the game, and Zinck hit four three-pointers apiece in the game, with the former X-Women player scoring a game-high 17, while Zinck chipped in 13 points.

Zinck and Laura Power (St. John's, Nfld.) led UPEI with five rebounds apiece, while Amy Gough (St. John's, Nfld.) notched a team-high five assists.

The X-Women, who only garnered one three-point shot in the game, were led by Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.) and Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, N.S.) with 14 points apiece.

Shannon Hatch (Arzo, Switzerland) led StFX with six rebounds, while Lessard, Alana Lawn (Brockville, Ont.) and Samantha Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) each added five.

Robertson, a freshman, also contributed a team-high five assists.

The X-Women return to action Saturday, Nov. 29 when they host the UNB Varsity Reds (5-2). Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Oland Centre. The Panthers have wrapped up play for the first half of the AUS season.
