X-Women top Axewomen 57-50 to earn first win of the season

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - In Wednesday night basketball action, the Acadia Axewomen, in their home opener at War Memorial gym, took on the StFX X-women with both teams looking to record their first win of the regular season.

Despite overcoming a 10-point deficit, Acadia fell 57-50 to the X-Women.

In a low-scoring first quarter that was all about defence, the Axewomen played a high-intensity first quarter and earned an 11-9 lead to finish off the opening frame.

For much of the second quarter, it was a back and forth battle with neither team able to establish a lead.

However, the X-Women then went on a 10-2 run, eventually scoring 23 points in the quarter compared to Acadia's 11, and held a 32-22 lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Axewomen battled back, led by the Acadia Subway player of the game Katie Ross, who had eight points in the frame and 15 points on the night to go with five rebounds. Ross converted back-to-back triples near the end of the third quarter pulling Acadia into a trailing position 40-43 going into the fourth.

Second-year forward Alexandra Berry took over the start of the fourth, scoring Acadia's first five points. Berry found open lanes, drew contact and gave Acadia the lead with six minutes remaining in the game. Berry's physical play brought 10 free throw attempts on the night.

However, after erasing the 10-point deficit to get back into the game, Acadia ran out of steam, turning the ball over 20 times throughout the course of the matchup.

StFX claimed a 57-50 victory thanks in part to a big fourth quarter from Shannon Hatch who netted 14 points.

Subway player of the game Lindsay Lessard recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while teammate Kayla MacIntyre added 10 for the X-Women.

Acadia and StFX will go at it again this Saturday in Antigonish. The Axewomen will then take on Cape Breton and Dalhousie in their Annual Shoot for the Cure weekend the following weekend and StFX will travel to UNB and play a pair of games.
